Peninsula Play Readers

The Peninsula Play Readers

Does the suggestion of reading plays with a group of like-minded enthusiasts appeal to you? We interviewed Peninsula Play Reader coordinator Mrs Meaker about her group’s activities.

How did you become involved in the organisation and how did the group start?
I first saw the group advertised in the local paper, Victor Harbor Times about 14 years ago and knew I wanted to join. The group was originally started by Erica Dicker who had a long history in amateur dramatics. At that time the group held performances for groups such as the CWA and RSL where each member read from a script to share with others.

What does your group do now and how do they connect?
Currently we meet every Thursday afternoon in the local church hall at Goolwa, to read together in a group from a selection of plays, we have a cup of tea, foster friendship and a love of theatre.

I gather from talking to you earlier, that play reading provides a wonderful outlet for performance, it’s really a form of entertaining storytelling, a vehicle for the imagination that everyone can be involved and participate in, that opportunity to sit and read in front of each other.

We enjoy the time and activity, it’s enlivening and the play reading is a social outing for our members. It provides socialisation, mental stimulation and the interaction that we need to sit, talk, discuss topics and create friendships. We are an older demographic with our youngest member aged at 70 and our eldest is 87 and with this activity we are not alone, it’s more than a play reading, it’s sharing life experiences.

Does your organisation need anything?
We would like some new members who share our interest.
