South Australia’s History Festival 2016

Running throughout the month of May, South Australia’s History Festival is one of South Australia’s largest community events. With more than 600 events taking place all around the State, the History Festival promotes our wonderful collections, places and stories through an amazing range of activities and events. These events are presented by more than 340 different community organisations – from museums and libraries, to CWAs and sporting clubs.

Take advantage of our glorious autumnal weather, grab your friends, and immerse yourself in history! There are all kinds of ways you can delve into the State’s past: you can explore our stories through tours, talks, walks, exhibitions, events especially for families, concerts, dinners and more!

Right in the middle of the month, on 18 May, the World celebrates the UNESCO-declared International Museum Day, and May is a great time to declare your love for your favourite museum, and to show your appreciation for the wonderful work done by so many volunteers in the sector. Check out some of the special events happening in museums during May for International Museum Day.

We also have some amazing heritage buildings around SA, and many of them open their doors during the History Festival. Glenside’s infamous Z Ward, Carclew House in North Adelaide, the Freemasons Grand Lodge and many others offer special access during May. Other events in the Built Heritage program include the Glenelg Air Raid Shelter and the Adelaide Gaol, along with numerous churches all around SA.

But if you’d rather explore history from the comfort of the bar, we’ve got you covered there, too. Bar Yarns: History in the Pub is a collection of talks and tours about a variety of subjects.

We’re pretty sure there is something for everyone, so find a copy of the program in your local library or visitor centre, or check it out online at historyfestival.sa.gov.au or download the app.

We look forward to seeing you out and about in May!
