Techfugees Hackathon Adelaide

Are you a hacker, hipster, hustler or humanitarian?
Want to co-create tech solutions for refugees living in SA?

Join the Techfugees Hackathon Adelaide.
5pm Friday 26th May to 6pm Sunday 28th May, at the Red Cross Building, 212 Pirie Street Adelaide.
Register for this free event via the Eventbrite link here as Adelaide follows in the success of the Techfugees Hackathons in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and takes part in this global initiative.

What is it?
It's not hacking into banks or big corporates! A Techfugees hackathon brings together the tech community with the refugee community to co-design tech enabled solutions that help make settlement in Australia a whole lot easier.

Around the world, the focus has been on employment, social inclusion and networks, education and skills, and entrepreneurship.

Some ideas from previous Techfugee Hackathons can be found here:

Who is it for?
Anyone interested in better understanding the issues facing new arrivals and want to help create a business, in 54 hours! We need hackers (techie people, coders, web developers), hipsters (graphic designers, UX/UI designers etc), hustlers (business people, entrepreneurs, investors etc) and humanitarians (people who care!)

What is the plan?
The Techfugees Adelaide Hackathon will combine the skills of web developers, designers, entrepreneurs, marketers, business minds and community members to co-design and develop creative tech solutions that focus on improving the lives of refugee families in Australia.

Former refugees who have already settled in Australia will be participating in this event to help teams more deeply understand the problems and challenges faced by new settlers.

Leaders from the tech community and people involved in refugee services will mentor teams during the experience. We launch and form teams on Friday evening, work together on solutions throughout the weekend, and on Sunday afternoon, teams will pitch their solutions to a judge's panel of tech and community leaders.

How does this work?
We meet up on Friday night, have a meal and get to meet each other and some of the graduates from Techfugees Sydney, now running their own businesses.

You will receive a set of user stories created by Red Cross that will hopefully stimulate your innovative and creative juices. Have an idea? Stand up and pitch it to the room in under 60 seconds!

Teams will then form based on the most interesting/novel/creative project ideas and then...get started! You have the rest of the weekend, till Sunday afternoon to turn that idea into reality.

Use the combined knowledge of mentors, coaches and a 'brains trust' to help your team develop your concept. Pitch it to a panel of judges for the chance to win prizes.

Why should I come?
You will meet awesome, amazing and inspiring people. We will be bringing a diverse cross-section of the business, tech, refugee and startup communities together for a common purpose. We want you to 'feel the buzz' of making good whilst meeting new friends and developing new skills!

What does it cost?
FREE! To ensure that everyone who wants to come, can, we have no registration fee.

Want to help in other ways?
We are still looking for a range of sponsorship and support including:
- assistance with catering (meals are supplied for participants at no charge)
- assistance with prizes
- assistance with promotion and communications
