SAcommunity Editor Training at City of Prospect Council

SAcommunity Editor Training at Local Councils and Public Libraries
Connecting Up staff visited the City of Prospect to meet with Alison Wall, the Volunteer and Community Programs Coordinator together with new SAcommunity editor, volunteer Megan on Thursday 25 May 2017. The morning involved discussing SAcommunity, particularly the upcoming project to make information accessible on the Public Libraries One Card library catalogue. The Connecting Up Community Information Coordinator also gathered requirement needs and suggestions from council regarding their dataset, ahead of delivering directory training.

City of Prospect is an SAcommunity partner and as part of their council’s strategic plan, has a target for “a strong community network linked to local community organisations” ensuring that council will work with SAcommunity to confirm that information on the clubs, community groups and agencies located and working within Prospect are current.

SAcommunity and Local Government Councils
SAcommunity is a free, online community service directory that is available to all local councils in South Australia. Connecting Up has delivered the program for more than 35 years, receiving support from the Government of South Australia and Public Libraries SA.
A few reasons councils may have for joining SAcommunity include:
•  Wanting to publish a local directory or update new residents
•  Keeping track of local community groups, sports and recreational associations and services
•  Needing to keep in touch with groups for community consultation, council events, tourist activities or to promote available grants
•  Wanting a way to manage, update and publish community information

SAcommunity can assist councils to provide comprehensive and current community information and make it available to the public via the web. Councils who are SAcommunity partners can export relevant information directly from the database for use in publications and communications.

Connecting Up can assist councils to include a search page on their website that will return search results from SAcommunity for their area such as in these examples from Gawler and Holdfast.

Connecting Up provides training and support to councils involved in the program with contributing members including staff working in libraries, community information, community development, volunteering, tourism, events and programs.

The SAcommunity Film (2min 30sec) provides an overview of the service from key stakeholders. The film features an information service provider, community organisation and council who explain how the directory is used by them to connect people with services.
