Adelaide Harmony Choir Concert: A German Requiem (Brahms) and 5 Mystical Songs (Ralph Vaughan Williams)
~ Contributed by Adelaide Harmony Choir

Adelaide Harmony Choir will present two works at their August performance; Johannes Brahms ‘A German Requiem’ in German and Ralph Vaughan Williams ‘Five Mystical Songs’.

Brahms composed the Requiem over several years, completing the works in 1866.  He first conducted his Requiem on Good Friday 1868 but later added the 5th movement.  The entire work was first performed in February 1869 and well received.  In the years preceding World War 1, the German Requiem was considered to have been performed in the German Language countries more often than any other work in the oratorio genre.  (Frank Reinisch, Wiesbaden, Fall 1987)

Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the Five Mystical Songs between 1906 and 1911.  The work sets to music, 4 poems by seventeenth century Welsh born poet and Anglican priest, George Herbert.  The first four songs are a quiet personal meditation with the final ‘Antiphon’ being a triumphant hymn of praise.   The work is written for a baritone soloist with orchestra and SATB chorus.  (Wikipedia)  The baritone for this performance is Jeremy Tatchell.

Andrew Chatterton began his appointment with the Adelaide Harmony Choir in 2016.  He is a talented musician,  singer and is a teacher at St Peter’s College where he conducts choirs across the Junior and Senior Schools.  He is Assistant Director of Music at St Peter’s Cathedral where he regularly conducts and sings with the Cathedral Choir.

Pianist and Harmony Choir Accompanist and Deputy Conductor Margaret Lambert’s musical career spans many years in Australia and overseas as a solo pianist, chamber music pianist, accompanist, operatic repetiteur, choral conductor, educator and mentor to her many students and the Adelaide Harmony Choir members.

Jeremy Tatchell, a bass baritone began his vocal training interstate but is now based in South Australia.  He has wide experiences in performing Opera and Oratorio both here and interstate.  He has been a member of the South Australian State Opera since 2013 has performed many roles.  We look forward to working with Jeremy again.

Sara Lambert – Soprano.  Sara has wide experience having performed with Australian Opera Company, SA State Opera Company, co-Opera and is well sought after as a soloist.  She is presently working in South Australia and is a teacher at St Peters College.  We look forward to working with Sara in this performance.

Adelaide Harmony Choir is an SATB choir of 85 singers with a repertoire including major oratorios, operatic choruses, sacred anthems and selections from popular musicals and light operetta.  The choir has travelled overseas on several occasions and successfully toured China in April  2019.
