Boldly-painted portraits and iconic South Australian places – from the local fish n chip shop to a video rental store - form the basis of a new exhibition which opens at the Bay Discovery Centre on Friday 14 February.

Aptly named Faces and Places, the exhibition is part of the 2020 Adelaide Fringe visual arts program and features more than 25 pieces from visual artists Josh Miels and Donovan Christie and fellow South Australian film-maker Henry Thong.

Both Miels and Christie are featured in Thong’s “Makers Who Inspire” short-documentary web-series, which have previously profiled celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow and fashion designer Paul Vasileff of Paolo Sebastian.

Josh Miels, a contemporary portrait artist, uses layers and layers of oil paint in his pieces to capture his subjects’ vulnerability and hidden emotions.

In 2017, Miels was recognised as a top 50 emerging artist in Europe and his striking works are held in private collections around the world.

Donovan Christie takes a different approach to his work, showing an acute eye for detail. He paints urban landscapes and South Australian locations from his childhood in the 1990s, including a Pizza Hut, a local takeaway shop and Video Ezy and Blockbuster video stores.

Their works can be viewed in the Bay Discovery Centre’s Ground Floor Gallery at the Glenelg Town Hall from 14 February until 22 March 2020 and admission is free.

The Bay Discovery Centre is an Adelaide Fringe venue for the 2020 festival’s visual arts program.
