Last year's winner Josh Balwin reflects on his experience
2019 Flagstaff Art 2019 Flagstaff Art Show winner Josh Baldwin, contemporary Australian oil painter reflects on his winning painting and his experience at the Flagstaff Hill Art Show.

Q1 Can you tell us how you came to paint “The Stonemason”
I met the subject of my painting "The Stonemason", Ron Johnson, while working on a music project in Farina in outback South Australia. Ron is the lead stonemason helping in the restoration of the original Farina buildings. I was struck by his calm presence and his involvement in and love of the arts. Ron used to work as an architect in Melbourne and has organised many arts festivals in outback South Australia.

Q2 How did you find the experience of exhibiting at Flagstaff Hill Art Show
Exhibiting at Flagstaff Hill was a great experience. The art show attracts a very high quality of work, and is extremely well-organised. It was a pleasure to be involved.

Q3 What affect has it had on you to win First Prize.
It was a thrill to win First Prize! As I mentioned, many wonderful artists enter the show and the work on display is of a very high quality. I was very honoured to have my painting selected and to join the list of previous winners, whose work I admire so much. It has also helped grow my career as an artist, and the prize money has helped finance further painting projects.

Q4 What plans do you have for the future.
I have many painting projects planned for the future. In March I am part of a group exhibition at the Stationmaster's Gallery in Strathalbyn. I also have a number of upcoming commissions, and in April I plan on entering the Archibald Prize for the first time. In June I will be involved in a Cabaret Festival show at the Festival Theatre in which I will be doing some live painting. 2020 is shaping up to be a busy year of painting.

The Judging Panel
Our Judges for 2020 are Mike and Tina Barr:

Mike Barr
Mike has been painting and drawing all his life and took it up seriously in the early 2000s. Since that time he has acquired over 80 awards including 17 first prizes both here and overseas. As well as painting in oils, acrylics and water colour are used occasionally.

Mike also writes about art and is currently a monthly columnist with the Australian Artist magazine and also writes for magazines in the US and UK.  His works are proudly included in the historic book 'The art of being Melbourne' - a history of the city through the works of its artists and includes names such Streeton, Roberts and more.

Mikes work is centred upon the beach and rainy cityscapes and his style is slowly evolving into a more impressionistic broad approach that concentrates on mood rather than detail.

After 16 years involvement with the Flagstaff Rotary Art Show he is honoured to be judging the 2020 show and looks forward to viewing what's on offer from the artists.

Tina Barr
Tina took up the brush about 15 years ago and has not looked back since.  As an award-winning artist, she has painted prolifically with her brushy-broad style which has developed over the years.

Encouraged by her artist husband Mike to enter her first show, she was rewarded with her first sale and many since then.  Several years ago, Tina sold 11 out of 12 works at the St Ignatius Show, a feat rarely matched in today's art world.

Tina has mainly concentrated on seascapes and landscapes and her broad impressionism invites viewers into the painting with stories of their own.  Recently, she has engaged in a series of works centred around the Adelaide Oval, both with cricket and footy, and these have proved to be very popular.

Having also been involved with the Flagstaff Rotary Art Show for many years she looks forward to picking out some of the best for 2020.
