Editors note: Sadly after 50 years of service to their local community, the Lions Club of Waikerie closed in April 2023.

The club were forced to move from their Lions Den, where they had been for 30 years, in an historic building on the river front in April 2022, when Loxton Waikerie Council revoked their club's lease in favour of commercial development for the site in December 2021 as explained in this article 'Waikerie Lions Club forced to find new home as part of riverfront redevelopment' from the ABC.

The club which ran regular community support and fundraising activities using their food van and hosted events around their river front home, at Waikerie Oval and Lions Park, held a clearance sale to sell off some of their key items to relocate to the former (and much smaller) Apex Club Shed 12A Penaluna Crescent, Waikerie, SA 5330, from an article in the Murray Pioneer in March 2022.

Members were working try to find places to host their food van and book and hold their meetings at other sites including the Waikerie Community Meeting room near the Waikerie Mens Shed, however despite their many years supporting community development, without their home-base and support in turn, we were informed the club closed in April 2023.

Find out more about the former club and their community service activities from our article written in 2021 below:

The Waikerie Lions Club
"Making our communities a better place to live, work and grow." sums up Lions Clubs across Australia, there have always been a need for Lions, particularly in regional towns.

Lions have a strong commitment to serving their local community and a wonderful history in supporting local community service organisations. Especially in the development and building of needed community facilities including playgrounds and local parks. In fact,  'Lions Parks' can be found across Australia telling the story of their service.

Waikerie Lions Club charter began on the 10th January 1972 about the time that many of the Lions Clubs started across South Australia's rural and regional communities and soon established the Lions Den Foreshore for the club as its centre of operations. The club starting with a group of community-minded locals that wanted to 'get things done'.

This sentiment continues to be expressed with the current Secretary Henry Stendara who was introduced to Waikerie Lions Club 4 months ago. "We had just retired and were new to the town we had been members of organisations such as Apex, Rotary and Meals on Wheels and wanted to continue to 'stay busy' in retirement and contribute to our new community."

Waikerie Lions and Community Connections
The Lions club has close networks and connections across Waikerie assisting many of the community organisations within the town with support and fundraising.

Recently, the club ran the breakfast barbeques for the Novita Mighty River Run https://mighty-river-run-2020.raisely.com a five-day boating adventure trip along the Murray River supporting people with a disability. Other activities have included an Outdoor Cinema community fundraising event amongst many other activities. Anywhere there is a need in the local community you will find a Lion.

Waikerie Lions and Community Development
Waikerie Lions Club community development projects have included building the Waikerie community playground, beautifying town features by building the local hospital fountain along with improving facilities to maintain a 'tidy town' by funding and installing new orange bins, a waste management project for the main street.

The Club runs regular community events such as the annual Waikerie Christmas Pageant, and encourages and fosters academic achievement by providing prizes for school students at the two local primary schools and high school. The sale of Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings is a yearly event in the community and Australia-wide.

Future development plans involve building visitor benches for the Fauna Park with its population of kangaroos and emus. There are projects, events and activities all year, and in January 2022 it will be the club's 50 year celebration, as there's always something happening with Lions.
