Food with friends

The Burnside Community Centre runs a Community Lunch program for older residents, funded by the City of Burnside. The program caters for people aged over 50 years who are socially isolated. It is supported by Catering Officer, Steve Thompson, and a team of local volunteers. Steve says that the service, which provides around 140 meals a week, was introduced several years ago. Participation has increased over this time and is now at capacity.

The lunch program is supported by  volunteers - Robyn has been volunteering with the lunch program for 5 years and Joan for 15. They volunteer for a variety of reasons, but most importantly because they enjoy being able to spend time with elderly residents and give something back to their community.

Beryl, John, Rex, Gordon, Leona and Max, were enthusiastic about the program. When asked why they participate, they gleefully told us that it keeps them alive as they live alone and it gives them a reason to get out of the house. Max said that the food is great and so are the prices.

The community lunch program runs from 12noon until 1.45pm Monday to Friday. More information about the Burnside Community Centre is available on SAcommunity. Further information about community services in the City of Burnside can be found on SAcommunity.
