People affected by past adoptions; Aboriginal people affected by the removal of children according to previous Government policies and legislation; individuals or families considering being involved in adoption through relinquishing a child or applying to adopt a child born locally or overseas; past clients wishing to access their records
Comment
The government authority responsible for the administration of South Australian adoption legislation. All adoptions of children by residents of South Australia are conducted through AFIS. AFIS holds all adoption records for the State of South Australia

- Processing of all applications by South Australians to adopt a child
- Formal counselling for people who are considering placing their child for adoption in South Australia
- Provision of information to parties to an adoption seeking access to the adoption file, including identifying information about the parties
- Restriction of access to adoption information on application by a party to an adoption (no identifying information to be released)
- Provision of information to Aboriginal people removed under past government policies and practices, who are seeking access to family information held by the Department
- Provision of information to adults who have been under the guardianship of the Minister to gain information about their past
- Information and referral to support groups for families adopting children from overseas - including Africa, China, India, Taiwan, Thailand
