GovHack
SAcommunity is dedicated to the annual competition and has supported GovHack with datasets and mentorship for many years. Find out more on the SAcommunity GovHack page >>here.

GovHack is an annual competition that brings together data enthusiasts, digital creatives, data analysts, story tellers, entrepreneurs and civic society enthusiasts to work together in teams over 46 Hours. To explore, mash up, ideate and communicate your concepts using open Government data (including SAcommunity data exports).

Your innovative ideas for data can assist the community, and you can win great prizes, create teams and build working relationships, access data mentors who can support you, and even meet sponsors from government and industry, and being part of this competition sets you apart from your peers and strengthens your resume.

Your competition entry
Over the competition weekend you will work with your team to outline your innovative hack and reuse of the open data resources available, in answer to a number of challenges provided by sponsors. These challenge questions are revealed on the Friday night of the event.

Your entry by the Sunday 5pm deadline must have:

1) A descriptive project page made by you in Hackerspace
2) Your open data story on your page – a short description of how you hacked the data to make it more useful, informative or engaging
3) A 3 minute video - the link to the actual video must be lodged on your project page and
4) The source (code/schema/design) you provide.

The SAcommunity Team members have been part of GovHack for many years and have a number of stories of their experiences.
