Croquet for one and all! Beginner to Advanced all welcome
Croquet has a long history that encompasses France where it was thought to have originated and called 'jeu de mail', Ireland who is credited with its modern form, Scotland where it has been mentioned with a golf connection, England where it became a craze in the early nineteenth century and there's a Wimbledon connection. These days it is popular around the world.
Closer to home is the North Adelaide Croquet Club (NACC). Formed in 2002 with the amalgamation of the Prospect Croquet Club and the Fitzroy Croquet Club. The North Adelaide Croquet Club has 4 lawns, a club house and hosts many croquet events including local, national and International tournaments.
I had the pleasure of talking to Gayle Searle, NACC Secretary who let us know "NACC are hosting the croquet events for the Australian Masters Games 2023 being held in Adelaide between October 7 - 13th, Robin Golding from the Club is the manager. It's a very big event for us this year."
At NACC members can play golf or association croquet, social and competition games and importantly there's time for socialising including morning tea between games, "wine downs" and an annual Melbourne Cup Lunch all held at their spacious clubrooms.
3 good reasons to join in....
- It's played with the whole family as age is not a restriction
- It's equally for men and women as teams can be mixed and all play on equal terms
- You can play all year round
In it's simplest definition croquet is a game that requires using a mallet to hit a ball through a hoop. It's also described as a mix of golf, chess and snooker.
Play it your way at your level.
