The countdown is on to this years Willunga Almond Blossom Festival and it’s set to be an amazing experience.
Sally Scantlebury, Festival Manager has the update on this year’s event -
The Recreation Park oval will light up on Saturday night with a new exciting addition to the Almond Blossom Festival, with the introduction of the INFERNO fire performers who will entertain crowds with their dramatic fire twirling and fire breathing act ahead of the huge fireworks display.
“Inferno thrilled the crowds at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival in February and are arguably Australia’s hottest fire show. They will bring a theatrical new dimension to our winter festival which is now in its 53rd year” .
The weekend program is packed with something for everyone -
Music - Willunga’s historic Show Hall will be alive with music with local artists and bands and a young and upcoming local talent showcase managed by year 12 students from the Willunga Waldorf School.
Baking the best Almond Blossom Festival Cake - One of the historical features of the festival is the opportunity for the public to put their baking skills to the test in making the best Almond Blossom Festival cake. Always a popular feature of the event, the cakes will be judged by a panel including the Country Women’s Association, local chefs and special guests. A range of prizes are to be won for all ages.
Children’s activities and performances - Throughout the weekend in and around the new giant tipi.
Science shows, story time, petting zoo, camel and pony rides, mini golf and a giant game.
And much more … From thrilling show rides, vintage car display, market stalls, mouth- watering food and drinks, to fireworks display and almond-inspired activities, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
A little piece of history from Sally ..
The festival is a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions, supporting local businesses, and fostering a strong sense of camaraderie.
The picturesque region of Willunga, south of Adelaide, holds a significant place in Australia's almond industry history. It was here, in the early 20th century, that Samuel Strout planted the first seeds of what would become the largest almond orchard in the southern hemisphere.
Today, as almond blossoms begin to grace the landscape, the vibrant community of Willunga eagerly prepares for the annual Willunga Almond Blossom Festival on 27th and 28th July.
In its early days, Willunga boasted an impressive 2,000 acres of almonds, captivating visitors who flocked to witness the breathtaking almond blossoms that painted the countryside in shades of pink and white.
As the industry flourished, the community seized the opportunity and established the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival in 1969 to raise funds for the construction of the town’s festival hall. This iconic event not only celebrates the region's rich history but continues to support the diverse range of clubs and organisations that call Willunga Recreation Park their home.
Come and join in the festivities in the region’s largest community event.
