Summer vibes, safe lives: Tips for enjoying the summer months.
Summer is here, and it's time to have fun and make memories with family and friends. With exciting new products hitting the market, it’s important to remember that summer can come with its own set of risks.
What are some of the summer dangers we should look out for?
• Young children can drown in as little as 3 centimetres of water; it only takes a few seconds. Adult supervision is essential for children under the age of 15 whenever they are around water, including portable pools.
• Pool toys and flotation aids (floaties) are for fun, and not lifesaving devices. Adult supervision is always required while children use these as they can be dangerous if not used correctly.
• Check toys powered by button batteries. Ensure the battery compartment is secure on items. Accidently swallowing a button battery can cause severe internal burns. For younger children, always choose age-appropriate toys to prevent injury and choking.
• Avoid injuries like cuts, bruises, sprains and fractures from using trampolines. It only takes one bad bounce, so always maintain your trampoline and watch your children.
• eRideables can be fun, but children should only ride age-appropriate devices and wear a helmet. Only allow one person per device and always monitor and unplug lithium-ion products once charged to avoid fire and injury.
Remember:
• Always supervise your kids.
• Summer products like portable pools, pool toys, flotation aids, toys that have button batteries, trampolines and eRideables can pose serious risks and injuries.
• Keep your summer fun and safe.
