Adelaide Recorder Festival 8-10 August 2025

There's something for everyone - whether you're a regular recorder player with a passion for playing and learning, recorder-curious or you just like listening to really good recorder music played by world-class professionals. Discover the joy of playing in a recorder ensemble at one of our workshops.
 
Opening Concert
A soul-warming concert for recorders and continuo in the intimate setting of St Theodore's Church. Featuring Kamala Bain and Brendan O'Donnell.
When: Friday 8 August 2025 7PM.

2-Day Immersive Workshop
For regular or experienced players with recorder sight-reading ability.
When: 9-10 August 2025.
Where: "The Stables", Marryatville High School, 170 Kensington Road, Marryatville SA 5068.
Tutors: Kamala Bain, Brendan O'Donnell and Amelia Monaghan.
 
1-Day Introductory Workshop
For the recorder-curious or returners with music-reading ability.

Kamala Bain is a recorder performance graduate of the University of Auckland, where she studied with David Coomber, and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she studied with Walter van Hauwe and Paul Leenhouts. Now based in Wellington, her work as a performer takes her back to Europe and Australia, with notable performance highlights including Pinchgut Opera (Sydney), the Recorder Co-op (Melbourne), the Akademie für Alte Music Bruneck (Italy) and the Irish Chamber Orchestra. New Zealand performance highlights include Stroma's Mirror of Times series, a Chamber Music NZ tour, and performances with NZ Barok, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, NZ Opera, and the Night Watch ensemble. Kamala is a dedicated educator, with private students in Wellington and online, and has held teaching positions at the NZ School of Music and the University of Canterbury. She is a highly sought-after workshop leader, has regular engagements in Australia and New Zealand, and has taught in Ireland and Canada.

Brendan O'Donnell has been described in the press as a "virtuoso, scholar, [and] presenter... of rare charm and lucidity". A former student of Kamala's, he is a regular performer with Adelaide Baroque and Adelaide Cantata Band, alongside frequent solo outings. He has performed in the acclaimed Woodend Winter Arts Festival with Accademia Arcadia and was a soloist in the 2023 Orpheus Recorder Festival in Armidale, NSW. For several years he performed with Münich-based Ensemble Raccanto and was a founding member of German ensemble Cembaless. He has extensive teaching experience, including at music schools in Bavaria, and at the Musiktage am Chiemsee, in Germany. Since his return to Australia, he has been a regular tutor at the Orpheus Recorder Festivals and for the Society of Recorder Players SA. He provides coaching for students and ensembles of all levels in Adelaide.

Andrew Georg is a versatile South Australian musician whose career encompasses church music, opera, choral music, and accompanying. Andrew studied at the Elder Conservatorium and was an Organ Scholar at St Peter's Cathedral and Pilgrim Church. From 2013-2024 Andrew was Organist and Choir Director at Christ Church North Adelaide. In July 2024 he took up the role of Cathedral Organist & Assistant Director of Music at St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide. Andrew also works as an Orchestral Librarian and keyboardist for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and as a Répétiteur for the State Opera of South Australia. He is a co-founder and organist of the Adelaide Cantata Band.
