From Willunga Recreation Park:
Willunga shares their love of all things almond blossom.
We enjoy winter here in Willunga with an amazing display of almond blossoms and our annual Willunga Almond Blossom Festival. On the weekend of 26 and 27 July, Willunga's Recreation Park will be transformed into an extravaganza of family fun.
The festival brings all the fun of the fair to the Willunga Rec Park with animals, games, rides, sideshows, kids crafts, market stalls, cookery competition, local live music and fun for everyone. And almonds for eating, cracking, colouring in and cooking too.
Across the weekend there will be a tractor display on the oval with target golf and Willunga Cricket Club sausage sizzle. South Coast Circus come'n'try sessions will be appearing this year along with the Aerokids performance on Sunday. Scott from Circus Elements has workshops on the oval, plus there will be a fun interactive science shows by Sciworld.
As you wander around you can grab tea and scones from the Willunga CWA rooms, hot soup in the Festival Hall, a burger from Atomic Burgers near the Ferris Wheel, coffee from Chloe, Hay There Coffee. Plus, there are more food trucks and drinks on offer near the large white marquee with local live musicians entertaining you all weekend. Another fun feature will be our kid's bubble show Saturday afternoon on the oval, plus Cool 4 Kids Show Sunday morning.
The almond-inspired cookery competition is on again; there are categories ranging from biscuits and cakes to novelty items for all ages and skill levels. The only rule is that they must contain almonds. This year's Festival Cake is by Andrea Ball of the Green Gourmet "A beautifully moist and fragrant cake thanks to the South Australian extra virgin olive oil which replaces the usual butter' says Andrea. Entries will be on display in the Almond Hub, along with some free almond blossom inspired craft activities for the kiddies. Also meet Graeme a font of information regarding growing and cultivating almonds. Whilst there say hello to Pauline, a local grower and grab a cone of sugared almonds.
Gates open on Saturday at 11am, live music and local beer, wine and food will run all weekend. Fireworks will light up the night at 7pm.
Sunday, the gates open at 10am and our weekend draws to a close at 4pm.
The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival brings our community together for a weekend of fun for all ages. This long running festival is a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions, supporting local businesses, and fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. "Every dollar raised from the festival goes back into supporting the clubs and organisations that call Willunga Recreation Park their home." event organiser Heather Williams said.
Don't miss your chance to be part of this fun community event.
Mark your calendars for 26-27 July and join us at Willunga Recreation Park for two days of family fun.

While many of the almond orchards around Willunga have been replaced by vineyards and new housing developments, there are still a few remnants, particularly southwest of the Willunga township. A drive along Aldinga Road and through some of the nearby backroads will reveal almond trees still in bloom during winter.
For those who prefer to stay closer to town, a walk down Giles Road offers a glimpse of the very first almond orchard planted in Willunga. These heritage-listed trees, now over 120 years old, continue to blossom and produce nuts. The Jubilee Rose Garden short walk from Giles Road offers a wonderful green space to enjoy more almond blossoms on display.
A smaller grove can also be found near the beautiful Willunga Golft Course off St Peters Terrace, near the driving range.
Most large-scale almond producers relocated to the Riverland in the later decades of the 20th century, drawn by cheaper land and water and a climate that was less cold and wet.
Today, those almond growers who remain in the Willunga district tend to sell directly to consumers, including restaurateurs, and through farmers' markets and online stores. Many have also diversified into hosting farm stays, events and workshops, while also aiming to create a balanced biodynamic farming system by growing a range of other produce.
