Goolwa Big Band are hosting their annual Big Band in Concert on the 31st of August at the Goolwa Centenary Hall. The band's publicity officer and vocalist Sharon Harding has provided us with some more information about the event:

I first came to know about Goolwa Band when I was asked if I would consider singing backing vocals for their singer, Dawn Tricky. I went along to rehearsals with a friend and before we knew it we were both signed up to sing with Dawn at the Band's 2015 Annual Concert. Shortly after that, Dawn announced her retirement from the Band, leaving a spot for me to try lead vocals. It was a daunting prospect but a kind band member suggested to me to “just try it”. Leon Lambert was the Musical Director at the time and was very encouraging too.

The early origins of the Band go back as far as 100 or more years ago but the current band was formed in 1986 as a brass band called the Goolwa & Districts Citizens Band and was then changed to a concert band in 1998 in order to cater for a broader range of instruments played by younger people in the community. In 2022, Goolwa Concert Band was officially re-named Goolwa Band, and is often referred to as “Goolwa Big Band” to reflect the kind of music we now play and the instrument lineup.

Now, in 2025, the Band has grown from just a dozen members to 30 plus. We are under the leadership of MD Allan Blackledge who has become known for his ability to get the best out of his Band. Audience members will quite rightly catch on to the fact that we are a friendly, welcoming group, always ready to encourage each other and give a helping hand.

You will find us playing at community events, retirement villages, and really anywhere we can all fit! We regularly hold cabarets and an Annual Concert. In the past we have been able to raise money for many worthy causes and partner with other great community groups. It's a well-known fact that music benefits our health and well-being and that holds true for our musicians, wonderful volunteers and audience members alike. Our sell-out cabarets are very popular!

We rehearse every Tuesday 6.30pm – 8.30pm at Centenary Hall Goolwa. Anyone interested in joining can simply give our Musical Director, Allan, a call on 0451 502 859.

Our Annual Concert is our next big show. It's at 2pm on Sunday 31st August. If you'd like to see and hear the Band, go to https://www.trybooking.com/DDCET to purchase your tickets. They are just $15 each.

Goolwa Band has provided me with a way to learn and gain confidence in my singing and stage performance. Belonging to this group has given me a sense of belonging and the feeling that I can contribute to a greater good. I love being a part of the Goolwa Band family.
