The Melrose Show is back, promising a day full of fun, competition, and community spirit! Intern Bethany Sweet recently had the opportunity to interview Helane Blieschke from The Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society Inc. in regard to the upcoming Melrose Show. During this interview she had the chance to learn a little more about the organisation, how Helane became involved and the ‘picnic show’ of SA.

About the Show
The Melrose show is a host to a wide range of entertainment, activities and competitions. The Show will have classics like live entertainment, and a sideshow alley. There will be free entertainment for children, such as soft-play, face-painting and an animal nursery, in addition there will be shows for children such as ‘Funny Farmers’ and ‘Cool 4 Kids’ which is bound to keep them entertained all day long.

For the adults, there will be entertainment such as chainsaw art, sheep shearing, yard dogs and the return of the stockman challenge after its success in its inaugural year last year. More interestingly, 'Metal Sheep Racing' a novelty event where competitors will pull along metal sheep made of tin.

Not to be forgotten, the show features an entire pavilion dedicated to a range of competitions, the heart of country shows. Categories include Cooking, Flowers, Agricultural Produce, Dairy Produce, Wool and, Needlework just to mention a few.

The show has continually been quoted as having the ‘best showground’ and some of the ‘best scenery’ out of all shows in SA, it’s bound to be a fantastic family day out. The Melrose Show offers a sense of community that cannot be found in any other place.

The Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society
The Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society Inc was founded in 1917 and hosted their first show the same year. The Society was gifted 100 acres of land north of the Melrose Township, to which they still own to this day. This allows the Society to control what is hosted upon the land, majority of which is used for sportsgrounds for local sporting clubs.

Participating with country shows offers, like the Melrose Show, offers a range of benefits for not only yourself but for your community. It promotes primary industries, fosters community well-being, and provides valuable education through competitions. These shows also serve as a platform for local businesses and help support rural life.

In Helane's case, she became involved with The Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society Inc around 10-12 years ago when she finished school. Growing up she had always loved the show, so it was natural for her to become involved within the committee where she eventually ended up Secretary. During her time as a part of the organisation she has undertaken a wide range of roles, such as stewarding the wool section.

See you at the Melrose Show!
