September 2012 events - get involved!

Here are some important national events coming up and some suggestions for getting involved.

2-8 September National Child Protection Week

Child protection services in SA are provided by both government agencies and community organisations.

Families SA is the SA government agency that is responsible for child protection services, providing support to children and families, intervention and collaboration across agencies.

NAPCAN, the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, is a nonprofit organisation that works to prevent abuse and neglect and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Australian children. NAPCAN invites people to support their cause by joining their advocacy network, donating or assisting with fundraising.

Save the Children is a national independent organisation that aims to save and protect children's lives and give every child a safe and happy childhood. Save the Children Op Shops welcome volunteers in locations throughout South Australia.

3-9 September Landcare Week

Landcare connects community groups, farmers, government, business and industry, scientists, researchers, schools and youth groups to work together to protect the land and coast for future generations. Landcare groups are active throughout South Australia. Set aside a few hours a month to care for your local park, bushland, beach, river or creek.

10-16 September National Stroke Week

One in six people will have a stroke. Strokes can happen to anyone so it is important to know your stroke risk. Make sure you know how to reduce your risk.

Stroke SA helps people after a stroke and provides information about recovery and rehabilitation. There are support groups in metropolitan and country SA.

21 September PARK(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide event that draws attention to the ways in which we use public space in our cities. The challenge of PARK(ing) Day is to transform a car parking space into a people-oriented space. The Adelaide City Council is coordinating activities in the city.

21-28 September Dementia Awareness Week

Promoting understanding of dementia and memory loss and advocating for services is the aim of Alzheimers Australia. In the lead up to Dementia Awareness week international speaker Dr Serge Gauthier will visit Adelaide on Tuesday 18 September. Find out more about services, education and events available in SA.
