Uniting Communities Homeshare program is a simple and unique way to assist you to live at home for longer.
Homeshare is a program for people aged 65 years and over who own their own homes and live in the Adelaide metropolitan area. The program pairs older people with homesharers who match a householder’s needs and personality. Homesharers live in the home in exchange for 10 hours of practical assistance each week and a small contribution to utilities costs. Homesharers can help you with a range of tasks such as gardening, housework, care of pets and occasional meal preparation. There is also the added benefit of security and companionship.
Homeshare staff take the time to get to know you and understand what you would like assistance with to enhance your life at home. This involves discussions around your personal preferences and the type of person you may feel comfortable sharing your home with. Homesharers are not carers or housekeepers, but practical, helpful people who are looking for suitable accommodation around study and/or work commitments.
Homeshare staff support both the householder and homesharer in introductions and trial stay overs. Time is taken to ensure both parties have an opportunity to voice any concerns before an agreement is reached. Staff then support both parties to develop a suitable agreement of services and then monitor this regularly. Homeshare is a Government-funded initiative of Uniting Communities in South Australia.
Sharing my home with a stranger was rather ‘odd’ at first, but having someone provide some practical help around my home, has been great and certainly enhanced my life. Joan, 80, Glenunga
