A community garden is not only a place where people can come to grow food and get to know each other, but also a place to foster community spirit.
The establishment of the Chapel Street Community Garden is the result of the combined efforts of the City of Burnside , Morialta Uniting Church Community Centre and the garden committee. Its establishment was in response to the growing interest within the local community around, amongst other things, promoting community cohesion and healthy living, urban food security and sustainable living skills.
The community garden is focused on organic gardening and creating a welcoming environment. To cater to the differing needs of the local community, the community garden incorporates features such as wheelchair accessible beds and communal plots. Since its opening, members of the community garden have worked hard to not only establish their own gardening plots but to also organise events such as compost workshops to learn and build friendships.
Following the official opening of the garden early this year, the garden committee has received a steady flow of enquiries for membership.
There is energy and a great desire to build this community garden and see it thrive.
The Chapel Street Community Garden is having an open day on 15 December 2012 1-3pm.
