Unleashed open data competition

Part of the national GovHack 2013

The South Australian Government is hosting an open data competition called Unleashed. Unleashed is part of the national GovHack 2013 to be held during the Federal Government’s Innovation Week.

Across the world, including in Australia, public sector data is being made available to IT entrepreneurs who remix data to create new services or information. Staged over a weekend, these events bring together creative digital makers to design mobile phone apps, web tools and other digital solutions.

Unleashed will spearhead a changed approach to data in government, providing an opportunity for application developers, entrepreneurs, open data advocates and visualisation enthusiasts to put their skills to the test, to network, collaborate, and battle it out on government data.

In one forty-eight hour session in 2012, more than forty projects were submitted to the national GovHack competition, generating innovative ideas on how to
use open government data for the benefit of the community.

The Unleashed competition in Adelaide will act as a catalyst, demonstrating how to deliver a project with long-term benefit to the community beyond the competition itself.

In a digital economy, government does not hold all of the expertise – but we do have large data assets and we would like to use these to benefit our community.
