Brain Injury Network of South Australia Inc.
Formed in 1992, the Brain Injury Network of South Australia Inc. (BINSA) has grown to become the peak body in SA representing the interests of anyone affected by an acquired brain injury (ABI) including family and carers. It is estimated that 35,000+ South Australians have suffered some form of ABI.
An ABI includes: strokes, falls, road trauma injury, brain cancers, hypoxia, asphyxia, drug and alcohol abuse, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and more.
BINSA embraces values and beliefs that focus on the rights of anyone with a disability. Our support and services include: information, representation, advocacy, counselling, rehabilitation, community connections and regional support.
BINSA has been innovative in the development of specifically targeted programs for people affected by an ABI. These include: the only community based ‘slow’ rehabilitation program in Australia for people who have suffered a catastrophic ABI, providing therapy and learning and life skills; the reconnect transition program for people suffering an ABI through a road trauma incident; assuming control, a program designed so people can manage their new life paradigm by understanding what has happened and how better to live for the future.
Since inception BINSA has led SA wide debate and advocacy about systemic issues impacting those affected by an ABI to influence policy and legislation ensuring improvement in services, support and better understanding of their needs.
Recent representation successes include gaining rebates, improving accommodation options, improving service standards and in 2013-14 as a lead reference agency, developing the rules and eligibility criteria associated with changes to SA Compulsory Third Party legislation to include ‘no fault’ provisions for those catastrophically injured, of whom some 30% suffer an ABI.
