Living Beyond Suicide
AnglicareSA’s Living Beyond Suicide is a unique service formed in 2006 offering specialised support to those bereaved by suicide in South Australia.
With specially-trained staff and volunteers, Living Beyond Suicide empowers families bereaved through suicide to find their own path through their grief. The needs of these families are unique due to the stigma associated with suicide; additionally, feelings of guilt, shame, isolation, blame and rejection may be felt along with grief.
Living Beyond Suicide works with other post-suicide support services such as the Bereaved Through Suicide support group and Minimisation of Suicide Harm, as well as offering annual events and training packages for the community. Improved awareness and openness about suicide and how to help those bereaved by suicide is essential in further reducing the stigma that surrounds survivors.
Based in Adelaide, Living Beyond Suicide covers Kangaroo Island and the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula, the metropolitan area, Gawler and Mallala. We also provide support to the Adelaide Hills region.
Federally funded by the Department of Health, Living Beyond Suicide provides practical and sensitive support free of charge to families and individuals. Staff and volunteers offer home visits and telephone support from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week. Anyone can contact Living Beyond Suicide directly. We also accept referrals from service providers.
In conjunction with International Survivor of Suicide Day, Living Beyond Suicide hosts the annual walk of remembrance Walk Through the Darkness in November each year. This year’s Walk will be held on Saturday 15 November 2014. The aim is to reduce the stigma of suicide, and provide a safe and respectful place for people to share their grief with others in a similar situation.
