ANZAC Day 2016 (Centenary of Anzac 2014 – 2018)
ANZAC Day is held on the 25th of April and marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during the first World War. The day serves as an occasion to reflect on war and commemorate those who have died in military and peacekeeping operations.
The Australian War Memorial has more information on the history and tradition of ANZAC Day. The ABC Australia Remembers site and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs ANZAC Portal also provide a range of information, and have been developed to educate and promote community awareness of Australia’s experience of war.
One of the latest groups to join SAcommunity is the Whyalla ANZAC Eve Vigil Committee. Heather Snowden, the Public Relations Officer for the group explains, "The Vigil Committee was formed after the concept of holding an Anzac Eve Vigil was raised by some of Whyalla's young citizens who had attended the Anzac Eve Youth Vigil in Adelaide. The Vigil is a way for youth from a variety of organisations and groups to come together to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who have served our country."
Anzac Day commemorative services will be held across Australia on Monday with the Returned & Services League of Australia (SA Branch) delivering ANZAC day activities in the city with services taking place at RSL sub-branches throughout the state.
