Welcome to The Queen Adelaide Society

I literally ran into the radiant members of The Queen Adelaide Society as they entered the Adelaide Town Hall to celebrate its 150th birthday. Overcome with curiousity I followed this beautifully costumed group inside to find out more about their organisation.

Welcome to The Queen Adelaide Society Inc.

The Queen Adelaide Society Inc. was established in 1981 by the late Dorothy Howie, who had become increasingly dismayed at the apparent lack of knowledge of Adelaide’s history by the general populace.

Dorothy formed the Society to promote public knowledge and awareness of Queen Adelaide after whom the capital city of South Australia was named. As a part of achieving this aim, the Society has published a small booklet entitled “The Story of Adelaide” which is available on application to the Society’s postal address or through the General Enquiries number.

To further promote knowledge of Queen Adelaide, committee members are able to “guest speak” on invitation at meetings, dinners and other functions for any group of people, no matter how large or small.

The Society holds a celebration each year on the thirteenth of August which is the anniversary of Queen Adelaide’s birthday.

Queen Adelaide had a great interest and love for children and worked throughout her life for a better education and living conditions for children and the poor in general.

In her memory, The Queen Adelaide Society Inc. makes an annual donation to a South Australian children’s charity from funds raised at various functions held throughout the year.

Members of the Society are kept informed of events and items of interest via newsletters prepared by the committee.

The Queen Adelaide Society Inc. was founded for all who share an interest in the life and times of Queen Adelaide, the city of Adelaide and have a love of children. The Society is open to men and women of any age. The annual subscription and entrance fees to functions are always kept to a minimum so that the Society is non-exclusive in line with the principles of our foundress, Dorothy Howie.
