National Homelessness Prevention Week - Hutt St Centre
The 1st to the 7th of August is National Homelessness Prevention Week from Homelessness Australia.
We contacted Adelaide-based Hutt St Centre which provides support services to nearly 2,000 people each year to find out more about their 'Walk a mile in my boots' fundraising event.
Imagine walking countless steps every day without the comforts we take for granted. This is a reality for many South Australian’s who are homeless – walking the streets on a cold, winter’s morning to find something to eat, a hot shower and a friendly face. In June and July alone 154 new people have come to our door seeking help and support.
Hutt St Centre’s purpose is to end homelessness for every person who walks through our doors, with care and without judgement. We do this by offering a place of opportunity, choice and change, where people challenged by homelessness are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential.
Each year Hutt St Centre calls on the community to walk a mile in the boots of South Australia’s homeless.
There are nearly 6,000 people experiencing homelessness in South Australia.
Who will you walk for?
Walk a mile in my boots is Hutt St Centre’s official National Homelessness Prevention Week fundraising event, with the Adelaide event in its eighth year and the largest of its type in Australia attracting around 3,000 walkers in the Adelaide event alone.
By walking with us, you’re helping people experiencing homelessness feel like they are not alone.
