Dementia Awareness Month

The South Australian branch of Alzheimer's Australia provided us with their online resources in order to share with you all more information on Dementia awareness month:

Dementia Awareness Month is an annual awareness raising month organised by Alzheimer’s Australia during September and supported by the Australian Government to improve awareness and understanding about dementia in the Australian community.

Why run Dementia awareness month?
Dementia Awareness Month aims to focus people with dementia, carers, media and the general public on dementia by sharing the facts, dispelling the myths and highlighting the support Alzheimer’s Australia can provide to people living with dementia and their carers.

Who is Alzheimer's Australia?
Alzheimer’s Australia is the peak body for people with dementia, their families and carers. It provides advocacy, support services, education and information. More than 353,800 people have dementia in Australia. This number is projected to reach more than 900,000 by 2050.

What is the theme for 2016?
The theme for Dementia Awareness Month 2016 is ‘You are not alone’. This theme aims to raise awareness of the supports and services available for people with dementia and their families and carers. Recent research has indicated that social isolation is one of the most significant issues people face once diagnosed with dementia.
