GovHack SA: Creativity + Data = Change!

GovHack SA 2017 took place over the weekend of the 28 - 30 July. The annual open data competition is held across Australia and New Zealand to inspire innovative open data re-use ranging from apps to projects, games or art.

Starting 6pm Friday 28th July 2017, prize categories are announced at 7pm, and the weekend closes 5pm 30th of July. In 46 hours, teams will create a project page, proof of concept and video that tells the story of how government data can be reused.

Connecting Up has always assisted with GovHack, with the Community Information Coordinator (Librarian) joining mentors from across South Australian government departments. The role of Connecting Up staff members is to act as a data mentor to introduce the SAcommunity dataset to competitors to see how it can be used for community benefit, however the day provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with mentors across government, to examine data and the challenges departments are looking to resolve.

Mentors include data, technology or idea experts across several government agencies interested in innovative new uses for their data, including the sponsors Office for Digital Government, Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Department for Education and Child Services (DECD), Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) with their LocationSA information and Carbon Neutral Adelaide, AFSA - Australian Financial Securities Authority to look at the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), Department for Planing Training and Infrastructure (DPTI) and more!
