Community Radio - Tribe FM 91.1

SAcommunity lists Community Radio Stations across SA with these not-for-profit broadcasters providing media by and for their communities. Trevor Garard volunteers as the Station Manager for Tribe FM and he shares with us his story of how he became involved, what their station does to help their community connect people and where they need help to continue delivering their service.

TRIBE FM

Tribe FM 91.1 is a Community Radio station serving the Onkaparinga Area from our studio in Willunga. Operating since 2011, the station prides itself on a policy of open access and community spirit.

I have been involved since 2015 mainly as a presenter and as a Station Manager since 2017. I am also responsible for training presenters, and part of the Tech Team and Programming Committee.

Tribe FM is run entirely by volunteers and is reliant on fundraisers and appropriate grants from industry and other groups.  We connect with the local community by promoting local services and events. The station, in partnership with the Southern Football League broadcasts football games each weekend during the football season. We also use the mobile outside broadcast equipment to visit events such as the Onkaparinga Council run Australia Day celebrations, the Tour Down Under, Willunga Almond Blossom Festival, local markets, sporting events, in fact anywhere we are invited to and able to set up the broadcast equipment.

Tribe FM has a strict anti-discrimination policy and will assist any part of the community that we can help, whether that be a book launch or a major fundraiser for a service organisation. We are conscious of our living environment and some of our shows reflect that. We are also active in an educational sense having two schools currently active and presenting one hour shows.

The Onkaparinga Area is one of the largest council areas in South Australia with a diverse range of residents that requires us to fundraise continually to be able to provide an ongoing service to these people. Grants from industry groups are always applied for and of course we welcome any donations from the South Australian community at large.

We welcome any enquiries from people wishing to join Tribe FM as volunteers, presenters, Tech Team personnel, production team members or in other capacities.

~ Trev Garard, Station Manager.
