2019 marks the 29th edition of the Flagstaff Hill Art Show presented by the Rotary Club of Flagstaff Hill. The art show showcases the work of both emerging and established artists located locally and interstate.
The Rotary Club of Flagstaff Hill offers great support for community events and projects in the Onkaparinga Council area however its influence is not limited to South Australia.
Due to the club’s ties to Rotary International, it’s reach is global. Initiatives supported by the Flagstaff Hill branch range from building a commemorative ANZAC walk in Flagstaff Hill to combatting Polio and helping to fund research into Prostate Cancer.
The art show will be located at the Flagstaff Hill Primary School and will operate between the 18th and 27th of April. Entry is $5 and proceeds from the event will allow Rotary to continue supporting their many worthy initiatives.
Ted Karo’s An Autumn Walk sets the theme for this year’s 29th annual art show. Depicting a peaceful walk through riotous Autumn foliage, the piece serves as an apt choice as Adelaide transitions into Autumn.
In recent years Mr Karo’s body of work has been a common feature at the Flagstaff Hill Art Show and will again be on display in 2019 along with more than 500 other artworks. Mr Karo works from photographs and is especially inspired by forests of the Northern Hemisphere and the country of his birth, as he arrived in Australia from Estonia in 1949 as a child refugee escaping the trauma of World War Two to begin a new life.
Despite always being interested in art, Mr Karo did not begin painting with oils until 2014 after the passing of his wife Judy. The process of creating art is commonly recognised as aiding the healing process following trauma, and Mr Karo admits this is true of his own experience: “I find the concentration required in trying to get it just right is what takes me out of myself and is one of the things that helped a great deal after the loss of Judy.”
An Autumn Walk constitutes one in a series of Mr Karo’s oil paintings that portray contemplative walks paired with the rich colours of Autumn. Peaceful scenes of landscapes and seascapes are also common to Mr Karo’s body of work.
Patrons are encouraged to come and enjoy this community event which will display an extensive array of high-quality art including photography.
