How Dancing Helps the Lyndoch Community

How dancing helps the Lyndoch Community

Dancing can be much more than a hobby.  For those deciding to step up onto the dance floor, it becomes a way to maintain a healthy balance between the body, mind and social life.

Irene is a regular in the Friday Night Lessons and Social meetings of Lyndoch Social Dancing. After nine years of practice, she’s able to point out how beneficial the sport is not only for her but to her fellow dancers.

Eight years ago, she heard a doctor explain the importance of taking enough care of physical and mental health as people get older. Since then, dancing has given her the chance to exercise her muscles and brain. It's also the time when she has the opportunity to interact with other people and keep her social life busy.

“Dancing is rewarding and stimulating.  I find it very enjoyable. I always look forward to Fridays nights, because it’s a social time. I rather go out and meet people than stay at home watching TV or being on my own”, Irene said.

Socialization is one of the most relevant aspects in her opinion. The dancers learn different steps during the sessions and, in the end, they’re invited to bring a plate to share in a late supper. They provide tea, coffee, and biscuits, as well.

“I love to go there, sit and listen to the music as people are moving around. The social side is really important. I encourage people of all ages to come”, she said.
Everybody is welcome
There are no age limits to dancing and Irene would like to see more young people being part of the group and was pleasantly surprised to see her grandson and his girlfriend show up one Friday night.

According to Irene, "once you learn the steps, you never forget it. If you’re young, you get it faster. You don’t need to bring a partner. When I started, I didn't have one".

Every member of the club has a different reason to enrol in a dancing session. Some of them want to master some moves before an upcoming event.

“There is a couple who goes on cruises often and they want to be able to dance in parties. So, if you’re going to a place where people will be dancing, you already know some steps.  If there is any specific style someone wants to try, they can tell us. We welcome everyone to join us”, she added.

The group holds several special events during the year with the next Tea Dance occuring on the 16th of June. The aptly named Glitz and Glamour Ball, will start at 12 noon and finish at 5 pm. Two other similar gathering will take place in October and December of 2019.

There is a $5 fee to enter any events or classes. The group tries to make it affordable for anyone wanting to participate.
