Chapel Street Community Garden
Chapel Street Community Garden ~ Guest post from community gardener Linda C
A community garden is not only a place where people can come to grow food and get to know each other, but also a place to foster community spirit. Members share their expertise, energy and enthusiasm, particularly at our monthly working bees.
The Chapel Street Community Garden is the result of the combined efforts of the City of Burnside, Morialta Uniting Church Community Centre and the garden committee. Its establishment was in response to the growing interest within the local community around, amongst other things, promoting community cohesion and healthy living, urban food security and sustainable living skills.
The community garden is focused on organic gardening and creating a welcoming environment. Since its opening, members of the community garden have worked hard to not only establish their own gardening plots but also the communal areas, fruit trees and a mud kitchen for our youngest gardeners.
The energy to build this community garden and see it thrive is evident. There is always something to do in a garden and currently the committee is working to upgrade the paths and improve accessibility. Each year we have a steady flow of membership enquiries and the waiting list for a plot is often only a season.
We host an annual open day with speakers, plant sales, pizza, BBQ and cake table This is a great opportunity to connect with the local residents and encourage interest in the garden. The garden is open on Tuesday mornings between 9 and 12 for people to drop in and have a look.
