ANZAC Day Dawn Service to be held at Brighton Oval

Brighton RSL’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service will be held at Brighton Oval on Sunday 25 April at 6am.

The service has moved from the traditional location of the Arch of Remembrance at Brighton Jetty to the larger Brighton Oval, to provide space for the community to pay their respects while meeting current COVID-safe requirements and is being supported by State Government.

The service will be held on the football/cricket oval at the Brighton Oval Sporting Complex, 410 Brighton Road, Brighton. Public entrances to the oval will be on Highet Avenue and Stopford Road.

The ANZAC Dawn Service at Brighton is traditionally attended by up to 6,000 people and the new location at Brighton Oval can accommodate up to 10,000 people.

The community is encouraged to arrive early to allow sufficient time to check in using the QR code which will be displayed at the entry points. Contact tracing forms will be available to check in manually for those who don’t have a smartphone.

Trevor Whitelaw, Secretary/Treasurer at Brighton RSL, said: “Brighton RSL thanks the City of Holdfast Bay and State Government for their support in making this event possible for 2021. “We look forward to returning to the Arch in 2022 and being able to invite the public back to the RSL premises. This is not able to be managed this year with the COVID restrictions in place”.

Amanda Wilson, Mayor of the City of Holdfast Bay, said: “With the uncertainty of holding events at the current time, I am really happy that council could step in to support the RSL to mark such an important day at such an important time. “This in an opportunity for our community to come together to reflect and to remember those who have sacrificed so much.”

The community is asked to not attend the Brighton RSL after the service as this will be limited to current members. There will not be an ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Glenelg in 2021.
