Have another crack at Willunga’s Almond Blossom Festival this July
Winter in Willunga means almond blossoms and the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival. The festival brings all the fun of the fair to the Willunga Rec Park with animals, games, rides, sideshows, crafts, cooking, music and fun for everyone. And almonds. Almonds for eating. Almonds for cracking. Almonds for cooking. Almonds for colouring in.
With covid getting in the way of celebrations in 2020 and 2021, it’s time to rug up and have another crack at the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival at its traditional time when the blossoms are on the almond trees around Willunga.
On the weekend of 30 and 31 July, Willunga’s Recreation Park will be transformed into an extravaganza of family fun. Lots of free giant games on the oval and activities run by the Girl Guides, free fun for kids of all ages. The perfect finale to the mid-year school holidays.
Grandmother Lu has been bringing her granddaughter since she was a little girl. “Imogen’s favourites were always the farm animals, craft and the gentle rides. But now she’s older she prefers the faster, scarier rides. She’s old enough to go on those with her friends!”
Fleurieu kids, it’s time to up the chores at home and save your pocket money for the rides and maybe a present for Mum. Oh, and fairy floss. And dagwood dogs. And chips. Even Grandmas like chips.
Make sure you’re there to have a crack at the Almond Cracking Competition. Maybe your secret technique will make you the grand champion? Sunday at 1:00pm on the oval.
The almond cookery competition is on again, anyone of any age can enter with categories ranging from biscuits and cakes to novelty items. The only rule is that they must contain almonds. Entries will be on display in the CWA Rooms, where you can grab tea and scones from the Willunga Evening Branch members.
Each year the highlight of the cookery competition is the Festival Cake. Helen The Greek Vegetarian has provided the recipe for 2022 and it’s a super simple one with hardly any washing up. “This one-bowl wonder is so easy to make yet delicious to eat. You would think there was much more to the method of it”, says Helen. The recipe cards will be in shops soon and on the website.
Gates open on Saturday at 11am, live music and local beer, wine and food will run all day. Fireworks will light up the night at 7pm. Sunday, the gates open at 10am and our weekend draws to a close at 4pm.
For families seeking some quiet time, you might prefer to bring a picnic and take time out under the blossoms at one of our lovely parks in town and come back for the fireworks.
However your family likes fun, Willunga is the place you want to be on July 30 and 31.
