Shoaib Khalid joined our SAcommunity Data Analytics Team and SAcommunity Website Rebuild Team for his Bachelor of Computer Science Semester 2, 2024: 13 August 2024 - 2024.
He is completing a 140-hour internship onsite with SAcommunity at the Connecting Up Office, Infoxchange for 2 days (14 hours) a week for approximately 13 weeks around his classes.

Personal Biography
Shoaib Khalid is a third-year Computer Science student majoring in Artificial Intelligence, with experience in Python, C++, C and other programming languages. He completed his A-levels at Cambridge International School Dubai. Outside of his academic life, he plays cricket for his university and enjoys swimming.
His aim through interning at the Connecting Up office is to develop his data analysis skills further while contributing his own expertise. Shoaib also plans to expand his professional network, and gain experience from those he works with which is why he has taken a position with Infoxchange. He is particularly interested in acquiring the guidance of industry experts, which he believes will be invaluable in his professional growth.
Shoaib is committed to giving back to the community and advancing his skills through his involvement with Connecting Up and Infoxchange. He hopes to utilize the experience and connections made here to embark on a new career path aligned with his passion in Computer Science.

Community Services in Councils Project
Shoaib has selected The Mount Gambier Council for his Powe Bi council reports, utilizing a database of approximately 399 community services operating in the area for the financial year 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. His reports followed previous visualization work by Renu Bala, and his completed reports can be found >> here.
There are a number of steps involved in the creation of community service information data presentations. A summary of data trends prepared, using information from Google Analytics and SAcommunity with subsequent Power Bi and Canva reports revealing data anomalies and corrections required, the database is updated and reports re-created with improved information. Final data reports are published to the website, and introduced by Shoaib Khalid to Mount Gambier council stakeholders for information and/or feedback.

Shoaib joined the SAcommunity Website Re-development Team on the 26 August 2024, learning of the value of experience in these real-world projects in his mentor session, to fulfil his interest in web development and work with others with the same passion.

Mentor Meeting 21st of August 2024
At Infoxchange, both volunteers and interns are given a unique opportunity to connect with satff members from across the organization for an informational mentor meeting. This initiative allows individuals to delve deeper into the roles and career trajectories of experienced team members, gaining valuable insights into their professional journeys and development.
Each volunteer and intern prepares five thoughtful questions for their mentor, aiming to uncover useful advise and guidance that can aid in their own career growth. After the meeting, participants are encouraged to document five key takeaways that were particularly beneficial, which can be shared on their portfolio to enhance their personal professional development.
During my meeting with James Newport (Senior Web Developer), we discussed his professional journey and how he advanced to his current position in web development. He shared valuable insights into the evolving landscape of the tech industry and offered advice on which programming languages and projects to prioritize. A significant part of our discussion revolved around my involvement in the web development team responsible for redesigning the website. James provided guidance on best practice in web development, emphasizing the importance of aligning with current industry trends.

- Understanding Career Progression: James emphasized the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in technology. His journey from a junior developer to a senior position demonstrated the value of building a strong foundation in web technologies and staying updated with industry trends.
- Focusing on High-Demand Technologies: James recommended focusing on languages like JavaScript, Python, and frameworks like React and Node.js. He mentioned that these are highly sought after in the industry and are critical for developing modern, scalable web applications.
- Importance of Real-World Projects: He advised that working on real -world Projects, such as the website redesign I am involved in, is crucial. These projects provide practical experience, help build a portfolio and demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.
- Industry-Relevant skills: James highlighted the need to develop both techincal and soft skills. While technical expertise is essential, he noted that skills like teamwork, communication and problem-solving are equally important and can set you apart in a competitive job market.
- Mentorship and Networking: Lastly, he stressed the importance of seeking mentorship and building a professional network. He mentioned that learning from other's experience and connecting with professionals in the field can open doors to new opportunities and provide guidance throughout your career.
My discussion with James was incredibly enlightening, providing a comprehensive roadmap for advancing in the tech industry. He underscored the importance of continuous learning and mastering high-demand technologies while emphasizing the value of real-world projects in applying theoretical knowledge. Equally crucial were his insights on balancing technical skills with soft skills and the transformative power of mentorship and networking. These insights have armed me with practical strategies and a clear direction for navigating and accelerating my career in Technology.
SAcommnity Peer to Peer Learning to Analyze Problem with Volunteers and Interns
Work experience - Internal and External Events, Connections and Networks
As an intern, I'm encouraged to immerse myself in our community by attending monthly SAcommunity Team meetings and Connecting UP staff gatherings, along with quarterly all-staff Infoxchange Town Hall meetings. These experiences have given me a fantastic insight into broader mission of our organization.
I love staying updated with the latest news and projects throgh our staff channels, especially the weekly updates from our CEO, David Spriggs. The informal 'lunch and Learn' sessions have been a highlight for me, offering a relaxed environment to expand my knowledge while connecting with other staff members.
I've also benefited from peer-to-peer training and capacity-building workshops, which not only enhance my skills but also allow me to network with fellow volunteers. Plus, I'm thrilled about the opportunities to attend stakeholder and partner events as they arise- each one is a chance to learn and grow in ways I never expected
Being an intern here means diving into meaningful experiences and building connections that will last beyond my time. I can't wait to see where this journey takes me!

Training and Development - Telephone Techniques
Telephone techniques follow on with email and communication techniques, to assist Data Analytics Team members with understanding more about the directory and data collection methods, in data cleaning and updating their individual dataset information, and, in finally introducing and presenting their data reports to council stakeholders. There are several telephone techniques meetings, as with the student's elevator pitches, practice makes perfect.

Innovation at Infoxchange 25th of September 2024

During our recent focused om innovation, COO Jo Davies shared inspiring insights on how critical innovation is to Infoxchange's mission. She referenced industry leaders like Tesla and Google, illustrating how these companies have successfully adapted to market changes and enhanced user experiences through innovative practices. Jo highlighted that innovation keeps us relevant in a competitive landscape and is key to attracting and retaining top talent.
She also noted the growing trend among funders, who increasingly prefer to invest in innovative projects,emphasizing the importance of creativity in our funding proposals. Jo's reflections serve as a powerful reminder that fostering an innovative culture is not just beneficial but essential for scaling our impact and ensuring our continued success at Infoxchange.
IX Stakeholder Events
Data Catalyst Network (DCN): Brings together people from across sectors, to break cycles of disadvantage through the innovative use of data.
Participants of the Data Catalyst Network will advance their data maturity while sharing and improving data insights through unique cross-sector partnerships to disrupt disadvantages. As a collective, the network will harness data and knowledge from the not-for-profit community sector, academia, government and business to better use and manage data to improve the lives of people across Australia.
DCN: Working with Government data - 01 October 2024
In this DCN meeting, Kristen Moeller-Saxone led a discussion on the complexities and importance of collaborating with government agencies for data sharing projects. The session highlighted recent resources released to guide organizations through the permission and processes necessary for effective data sharing.
Key Points Discussed:
- Data sharing Challenges: Kristen emphasized that while data sharing is vital, it can he sensitive and complicated, especially when handling sensitive data. The discussion included the significance of managing data responsibly and effectively.
- Practical Insights: David Engelhardt shared insights on the operational challenges of data linkage across multiple government departments, nothing that while there are data linkage units in most states, they often focus on research rather than operational use. Collaboration tends to be easier with a lead agency, reducing costs and perceived risks.
- Successful Examples: Ann Hampshire provided updates on successful data sharing initiatives across various states, including South Australia, WA, Tasmania, Queensland, and ongoing efforts in Victoria and NSW. She higlighted the importance of sharing successful framworks to ease the process for other organizations.
- Future Initiatives: The webinar concluded with an invitation to the next session focused on early childhood data analysis in South Australia, emphasizing the link between child attendance and well-being.
- Engagement Statistics: A poll revealed that 63% of attendees had experienced collaborating with government departments, with "challenging" being a prominent descriptor of their experiences.
The webinar provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and resources, encouraging attendees to overcome challenges in data sharing to achieve meaningful outcomes.
Participants were encouraged to explore additional resources available on the digital transformation hub and to register for upcoming webinars to further enhance their understanding and engagement in data sharing initiatives.
The Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance (ADIA) is a shared initiative with over 500 business, government, academic and community organisations working together to accelerate action on digital inclusion. ADIA is supported by Infoxchange, Google, Telstra and TasNetworks. Volunteers and Interns have the opportunity to attend these stakeholder meetings.
Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance (ADIA) - Positive impacts of AI : The intersection of AI and Digital Inclusion
The recent ADIA September meetup focused on the intersection of AI and digital inclusion, underscoring the critical need for equitable access to AI-driven tools. The session was led by David Spriggs, CEO of Infoxchange and chair of the Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance, who highlighted both the potential and challenges of using generative AI to bridge digital divides. Key discussions centered on addressing cultural, socioeconomic, and geographic barriers that limit access to AI. Professor Michael Desani stressed the importance of a "Wikipedia moment," suggesting that tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney should be used as starting points, but approached with caution and critical analysis. Kit McMahon, CEO of Women's Health in the Southeast, emphasized the role of AI in empowering marginalized communities, while Anisha, a social worker from Nepal, shared her personal and professional experience of how AI tools have transformed her journey in Australia.
Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance (ADIA) - The Economic Benefits of Overcoming Digital Exclusion: A deep dive into Good Things Australia's latest report
The ADIA October Meetup emphasized the significant economic and social advantages of digital inclusion, with recent studies revealing it could generate nearly half a billion dollars annually by improving employment opportunities, productivity, healthcare access, social connections, and financial security. Personal stories shared during the event highlighted the transformative effects of digital literacy, especially for seniors and rural communities, helping them stay connected, access essential services, and use technology safely. A central takeaway was the pressing need for a national digital inclusion strategy, alongside increased investment in digital skills training and access programs. Attendees were urged to use the research as a basis for advocating policy changes to ensure all Australians can fully engage in an increasingly digital world.

Getting Started with Data: Strategy and Collection for Your NFP
The webinar focused on empowering NGOs to embark on thier data journey by providing essential tools for effective data management. It emphasized the importance of data not just for funder reporting, but for enhancing service effectiveness, reach, and quality. Participants learned about key topics such as data collection methods, developing a data strategy, understanding data ethics, and measuring impact through real case studies. This comprehensive approach equips NGOs to leverage data for meaningful impact in thier communities.

Learn how to build your own custom AI assistant
In this webinar, "Unlocking the Future: Creating Your Own Co-Pilot with Generative AI", I ganed valuable insights into the role of AI Co-Pilots in transforming customer service. We explored the current landscape of generative AI, focusing on how to leverage OpenAI's model to create customized solutions. The session emphasized the accessibility of AI development through no-code and low-code options, enabling individuals to build their own CO-Pilot without extensive programming skills. Additionally, we discussed effective strategies for integrating AI with existing data to enhance user interactions. This experience has not only expanded my knowledge but also inspired me to implement innovative AI solutions in my project, ultimately improving user experience and optimizing service offerings.

In this Webinar, I learned how to enhance collaboration wiith colleagues using tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The session focused on practical strategies for working together on reports and grant applications without the frustation of locked file. I discovered how to create basic forms and surveys in Excel Online, which will streamline data collection for future projects.
We also explored effective document storage solutions through OneDrive and SharePoint, ensuring easy access and sharing among team members. Additionally, the webinar covered using OneNote and Teams to run meetings efficiently, allowing for better organization and communication.
By the end of this session, I gained valuable skills in creating and collaborating on documents, managing file storage, and utilizing digital tools to enhance teamwork. This experience has empowered me to implement these strategies in my work, fostering a more collaborative and productive environment.
Getting Started with Analytics: Tools, Infrastructure & Data
In webinar on Getting started with Analytics, I gained valuable insights into how NGO's with limited resources can effectively embark on thier data journey. The session provided practical tips on essential tools and infrastructure needed to leverage data, regardless of an organization's size.
We explored strategies for managing messy data, which is common challenge faced by many organizations. Through case studoes, including real-life examples from Good Data Institute (GDI) projects, I learned how other NGO's successfully navigated their data journeys. This showcased not only the challenge but also the innovative solutions that can be implemented.
By the end of the session, I acquired actionable strategies for starting analytics with limited resources, along with tips and tools to help manage and utilize data effectively. This experience has equipped me with the knowledge to apply these strategies in my own work, enhancing my ability to make data-driven decisions and optimize organizational impact.
In my final webiner, "ÄI for Social Impact", I had the opportunity to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for non-profit organization (NFPs). Led by Ryan from Tech Impact, the session focused on how AI can be harnessed to address pressing social issues and enhance support for communities.

Final Reflection
During my internship ay Infoxchange, I had the opportunity to work on variuos impactful projects, notably with the Mount Gambier Council. I developed insighful Power Bi and Canva reports, which facilitated data-driven decision-making for the council. Collaborating with fellow interns, I fostered a strong team enviornment, enhancing our collective skills and creativity.
In addition to reporting, I contributed to the web development team, assisting in the redesign and rebuilding of the organization's website. This experience allowed me to refine my technical skills and gain a deeper understanding of user experience and design principles. Overall, my time at Infoxchange was invaluable, providing me with practical skills, professional connections, and a solid foundation for my future career.
