The State Coroner must inquire into every death that is reported in accordance with the Coroner's Act. The inquiry is to establish the cause of death, and is required when a person dies violently, or from an unusual, unknown, unexpected or unnatural cause. In some cases an inquest is held to establish the cause and circumstance of death. Deaths in certain other circumstances, such as deaths in custody, must also be investigated.
