Personal Biography
Jamie is a second-year Masters' student in Computing and Innovation at the University of Adelaide. Previously she studied her Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Fudan University, and worked as a Banking Product Manager at the Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank in China. Here she was responsible for translating customer needs into product features and worked closely with the development team to ensure these features were implemented into tangible banking products.

Currently, Jamie, together with her classmates, has joined the volunteer team at Connecting Up to participate in an industry project in collaboration with the University of Adelaide. Their plan involves integrating a chatbot into the SAcommunity website to improve the efficiency and accuracy of searches, a move that is expected to enhance the user experience of the community information website and provide a more effective service to the local community.

In the future, Jamie aspires to be a software engineer with technical proficiency in the financial sector. She aims to apply her academic background in computer science and hands-on experience to boost the efficiency and quality of financial services, ultimately enhancing people's lives.

Jamie and her University of Adelaide classmates Yong Kheng Beh, Zewei You, and Xinyue Luo started their Master of Computing and Innovation project in February 2024. The project aimed to embed an AI-driven chatbot into the SAcommunity website to enhance the site's search functionality and improve user experience. Jamie was the primary developer for the chatbot's frontend and collaborated with Violet Zewei to connect the frontend with the backend, achieving seamless data transmission and real-time response, allowing users to obtain the needed information instantly in the chat interface. Jamie contributed most of the frontend code and worked with Clover Xinyue to repeatedly refine the chatbot's UI for optimal integration with the SAcommunity website.

Over 12 weeks, the team closely collaborated with Connecting Up's developer team to successfully develop an LLM-driven chatbot. This chatbot, accessible via a simple click on the homepage, can query the website's database for communities or services based on user input, supporting fuzzy search requests, automatic typo correction, and geographic location searches.

The project officially kicked off with the Project Initiation Launch Meeting on March 15, 2024. The meeting was attended by Pankaj Chhalotre, Head of Connecting Up; developers James Newport and Cameron Brown; and Catherine McIntyre, the community information and volunteer/intern coordinator. The session was crucial for discussing the current pain points of the website's search engine and for aligning on the objectives for the chatbot project. Communication management strategies were also established, including bi-weekly client meetings and routine interactions via Slack, ensuring a structured and effective exchange of information throughout the project's duration.
