Dementia Awareness Month

The South Australian branch of Alzheimer's Australia provided us with their online resources in order to share with you all more information on Dementia awareness month: 

Dementia Awareness Month is an annual awareness raising month organised by Alzheimer’s Australia during September and supported by the Australian Government to improve awareness and understanding about dementia in the Australian community.

International Literacy Day - Reading Writing Hotline

Thursday the 8th of September is International Literacy Day ‘Reading the Past, Writing the Future’, SAcommunity contacted organisations that provide services to improve literacy in SA, to find out more about their work and how they help.

 

Whyalla and Port Augusta Outreach

Connecting Up’s Community Information Coordinator undertook a regional outreach trip travelling to Whyalla and Port Augusta on Wednesday the 31st August and Thursday 1st September, to provide information and training on the SAcommunity program.

 

Cancer Council SA: Daffodil Day - 26 August 2016

The Cancer Council provides support and information services for all South Australian’s affected by cancer.

SAcommunity contacted the Cancer Council SA for their fundraiser Daffodil Day Friday 26 August to find out more about the campaign. They gave us Alex’s story, someone who has had their own experience with cancer and would like to encourage other people to support the day and join the fight to beat cancer.

National Science Week

South Australia launched National Science Week from 13-21 August 2016, an annual celebration of science and technology with science week events held across the state. Events are held by universities, research institutions, schools, libraries, museums and science centres.

 

We contacted the National Science Week SA Coordinating Committee to find out more about some of the upcoming events in South Australia.

 

National Missing Persons Week

The month of August introduces a number of significant and overlapping community awareness issues, in particular last week’s National Missing Persons Week 31 July -7 August. SAcommunity contacted the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre and asked them to tell us more about their work in raising awareness of the number of Australians who are reported missing.

 

National Homelessness Prevention Week - Hutt St Centre

The 1st to the 7th of August is National Homelessness Prevention Week from Homelessness Australia.

We contacted Adelaide-based Hutt St Centre which provides support services to nearly 2,000 people each year to find out more about their 'Walk a mile in my boots' fundraising event.

The 31st of July is National Tree Day a community tree planting event from Planet Ark. Locally, we talked to South Australian not-for-profit group Trees for Life to find out more about their Bushcare volunteering events and also their Trees for Habitat program, creating habitat for the endangered Malleefowl.

Catalyst Foundation (formerly Seniors Information Service)

Jenny Hughes the CEO of Catalyst Foundation (formerly SA Seniors Information Service) was pleased to tell us about their organisation’s new name change and how it reflects the work of their service:

 

SA Seniors Information Service is now Catalyst Foundation
 

The new name reflects the evolving work that has been undertaken by Seniors Information Service in the areas of ageing, disability, lifestyle, business and employment and learning that is offered to the community of South Australia.
