Placement Overview (Activity Scope)

About the Database
The SAcommunity Community Information Directory is an online CiviCRM database consisting of ~15,500 records receiving ~1,7000,000 views a year. This continually maintained, summarised and structured data is held under a Creative Commons Attribution License for public benefit.

About the Project
Students as part of the Data Analytics Team prepare, clean, and create reports, dashboards and maps on community record data, presented using Power BI and Canva and published on the SAcommunity Statistics webpage, investigating service types, availability and demand over time.

Project roles and responsibilities
Students select one or more councils (or electorates, as available) and utilise data subset exports from the SAcommunity database and Google Analytics. Students’ clean data and prepare multiple reports for the council(s) or electorate(s), as available up to the current calendar/financial year using documented instructions, given templates, tools and platforms; Office365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams), CiviCRM database, Google Analytics, Python, GitHub, Power BI and Canva.

What is the Data Content?
The Data comprises of
community information records which describe resources that meet the information needs of a community and include details of: Organisations (associations, groups and clubs); Programs or services (childcare, food assistance), Events (annual fairs, shows and festivals) and Other resources (facilities, sports centres, swimming pools).

Why is the Data Significant?
Community Information documents and reflects life, the directory provides a contact list of organisational information in a classified order, indexed and summarised in brief format reflecting community services available for the public. Community services and services demand are impacted by and emulated in the changes in social conditions, economic development, demographics, and cultural diversity of the population they serve.

Who is the Directory Database for?
Information is available on the website for the public and community service organisations, to discover ‘who is doing what, where’ in the not-for-profit sector, with data exports used by government, councils and public libraries for referrals (assistance), communication (e-campaigns), consultation (community engagement, partnerships) and research.

How can I have impact?
Data reports allow data-driven insights to reveal community patterns, trends and relationships. This supports decision-makers in councils, government, or public libraries to understand more about the community services operating in their area and their residents’ needs. Whilst the practice of producing reports and subsequent data cleansing improves the quality of database information for all stakeholders, as any updates, changes and anomalies found and corrected for the report are applied to the online directory database.
