On October 11 Headspace Day was celebrated for the first time. Headspace is a government initiative which provides mental health information, support and services for young people. Headspace day was about promoting the foundation and ensuring young people across the country have access to youth friendly, mental health services, no matter where they live.

 

International Rainbow Girls

 October the 11th is International Day of the Girl Child, the theme Girls’ Progress = Goals Progress: What Counts for Girls, examines gender equality and the existing gaps in girls progress and works to recognise the importance of empowering women and girls to build their communities. SAcommunity spoke to the International Rainbow Girls group in Adelaide who offer leadership through community service.

Disability Ageing and Lifestyle Expo - Catalyst Foundation

Catalyst Foundation, previously known as Seniors Information Service, is an inclusive and independent organisation seeking to improve the lives of all South Australians in the areas of Ageing, Disability, Lifestyle, Employment, Business and Learning.

 

Catalyst Foundation is pleased to present the 2016 Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo, Adelaide’s largest Disability and Ageing community event that attracts audiences of 3,000 people with upwards of 150 service and product providers.

Dementia Awareness Month

The South Australian branch of Alzheimer's Australia provided us with their online resources in order to share with you all more information on Dementia awareness month: 

Dementia Awareness Month is an annual awareness raising month organised by Alzheimer’s Australia during September and supported by the Australian Government to improve awareness and understanding about dementia in the Australian community.

International Literacy Day - Reading Writing Hotline

Thursday the 8th of September is International Literacy Day ‘Reading the Past, Writing the Future’, SAcommunity contacted organisations that provide services to improve literacy in SA, to find out more about their work and how they help.

 

Whyalla and Port Augusta Outreach

Connecting Up’s Community Information Coordinator undertook a regional outreach trip travelling to Whyalla and Port Augusta on Wednesday the 31st August and Thursday 1st September, to provide information and training on the SAcommunity program.

 

Cancer Council SA: Daffodil Day - 26 August 2016

The Cancer Council provides support and information services for all South Australian’s affected by cancer.

SAcommunity contacted the Cancer Council SA for their fundraiser Daffodil Day Friday 26 August to find out more about the campaign. They gave us Alex’s story, someone who has had their own experience with cancer and would like to encourage other people to support the day and join the fight to beat cancer.

National Science Week

South Australia launched National Science Week from 13-21 August 2016, an annual celebration of science and technology with science week events held across the state. Events are held by universities, research institutions, schools, libraries, museums and science centres.

 

We contacted the National Science Week SA Coordinating Committee to find out more about some of the upcoming events in South Australia.
